Corporation Should Tap Entrepreneurs For Leadership Positions

Most corporations promote employees to occupy various leaderships roles. From the lowest leadership roles to the highest, they are are most often filled by normal employees that got promoted to higher and higher positions.

I believe this is the wrong approach, and instead the corporations should seek employees with business experience from within the corporation or even entrepreneurs from outside the corporation to fulfil the leadership roles, even the lowest levels ones.

Why Entrepreneurs are better team leaders?

For many reasons, i’ll list few:

  • An employee is always an employee: do not expect that if you promoted employees, their mindset will change. The courage needed to get things done – the one entrepreneurs have in abundance – is most often absent in employees. For the employee any job he’ll assume will just be the job, whereas the entrepreneur assumes the role.
  • Leadership is natural to entrepreneurs not to employees: This will reflect on the interaction between the team and the leadership. Employees promoted into a leadership role very rarely fit into the role, whereas it comes natural and fits perfectly for entrepreneurs.
  • Entrepreneurs have business logic, employees don’t: Even with extensive training of employees, providing them with different scenarios, employees most often do not have the business logic and instinct to make the right decision, unless it was spoon-fed to them through training.
  • Employees chosen for leadership will choose the next line of leadership. Bs often choose Bs , Cs and Ds. Employees choose their friends or people they like, entrepreneurs choose people that have leadership skills.
